Guacamole
Our family has been going to Mexico since the '80s. We've always loved guac and it's always been a part of our family meals. We used to make it creamy smooth when Joc and Cam were young, but this version is a bit chunkier and has a secret ingredient: cumin. Cumin is widely used in Mexican cooking, but we had never heard of its use in Guac until I watched a cooking show in the 1990s that revealed this "secret" flavor enhancement. We like it spicy, garlicky, and in large quantities.
Ingredients
- 4 medium avocados
- 2 tsp cumin (or more, to taste)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 medium lime, juiced
- ½ of a smaller onion, finely diced
- 1 large serrano pepper, seeded and finely diced
- 3–4 cloves of garlic, finely diced or squeezed
- Handful of cherry tomatoes, diced
- Handful of cilantro, finely chopped
Method
- 1
Mash the avocado, cumin, salt, and lime juice in a bowl until somewhat smooth (small chunks).
- 2
Add the onion, serrano, garlic, tomatoes, and cilantro. Mix well. Taste for salt level.
- 3
Serve with tortilla chips!
A note from James
If you want a smoky, spicy kick, add chipotle chili powder as well. Drink/wine pairing: Margarita.
