The TnT! Kaboom!
One year in Mexico, after family and friends had left, we stayed on in January, and discovered that we had a big bottle of tequila blanco left, a bottle of "Licor de Naranja," and a flat of Schweppes tonic water bottles. With only a couple of weeks left in our stay, we needed a new cocktail to encourage finishing these mismatched bottles before we left. I suggested that we loved G&Ts so much that we should try making them with tequila: the TnT was born, a taste explosion, sharp tonic carrying the salted peppery tequila and chile bite, the impact softened slightly by a hint of sweet orange liqueur. It wasn't until a few years later that we were toasting our TnTs and I suddenly knew the toast that had to go with them.
Ingredients
- 2 parts Tequila Blanco
- ¼ part orange liqueur (a splash)
- 1 part lime juice
- 2 lime slices
- 2–3 cubes ice
- Pinch of salt
- A couple of thin slices of serrano or other chile
- Tonic water to fill glass (we prefer the slightly sweeter and strongly carbonated tonic, like Canada Dry or Schweppes — artisanal tonic water like Fever Tree is less sweet and carbonated)
Method
- 1
Slice some lime pieces, and squeeze lime juice.
- 2
Put ice, lime slices, chile slices and pinch of salt in glass, and pour over the tequila, orange liqueur and lime juice. Stir well!
- 3
Then add the tonic water to this mix, and gently move it through the mix with a fork (don't stir — releases too much of the fizz).
- 4
The family toast is "Kaboom!"
